STATEMENT from the Project on Predatory Student Lending on President Biden’s Latest Borrower Defense Discharges
BOSTON (January 13, 2025) – The Project on Predatory Student Lending (PPSL), the leading legal organization representing student borrowers against predatory for-profit colleges, issued the following statement on President Biden’s announcement today that the Biden-Harris administration will approve additional student debt relief measures, totaling announcements of $183.6 billion in student loan forgiveness for more than 5 million borrowers since taking office.
Today’s announcement included $1.26 billion in relief for 85,000 borrowers based upon borrower defense findings.
Statement from Eileen Connor, President and Executive Director of the Project on Predatory Student Lending:
“The discharges announced today – and over the last four years – by the Biden administration bring welcome, long awaited relief for hundreds of thousands of borrowers who were defrauded. Predatory schools like those owned by the Center for Excellence in Higher Education (CEHE) cheat students and the federal student loan system for profit, leaving students holding the bills with little to no recourse.
Borrower defense is an essential consumer protection that has been in place for over thirty years so that those who are harmed by predatory actors can access a fair path to relief. PPSL has fought for borrower defense and the legal rights of student borrowers across multiple administrations and we look forward to continuing this progress.”
